Chiloe National Park: Exotic Beauty
The Grand Island of Chiloé (Isla Grande de Chiloé) is the second largest island of Chile. This place is full of magic and myths; it is covered with mist and coves. The Chiloe National Park is located in the western region of this island. The area of this National Park is of 43,057 hectares (94,725 acres). This place is divided in three sectors: Anay, Metalqui Isle and Chepu.
The climate tends to be warm and humid, and it is the main reason why an evergreen forest exists. This forest is made of luma, coigüe, terebinth, myrtle, larch, tepu and shrubs. Larch grows in isolated areas with altitudes of 600 meters (1,968 ft). The fauna of this awesome place includes the Chilean shrew opossum, the fox of Chiloé Island, mountain monkey, sea lion, pudú, finch, sea otter and the Patagonian woodpecker, The insular nature of the island is the reason why some of the species mentioned above are endemic.
The park has attractive places such as Lake Cucao and the coastal dunes (with a length of several kilometers), the Chanquín sector, the colony of sea lions of Metalqui Island, the diverse range of vegetation in the mouth of Abato river, the Huelde lake and the Cole-Cole sector, which is located to the north of Punta Huentemó near a beach suitable for walking, horseback-riding and fishing.
