Chauchilla Cemetery: Preservation of a Heritage

Chauchilla is a place located 30 km from Nasca. Many mummies can be visited here. Peru witnessed how the Nazca culture grew from the years 200 AC to 800 DC. The pre-Inca and the Inca culture had one aspect in common: both created their civilizations in inhospitable places.

Grave robbers and archeologists evidenced the previous discovery of the culture of Nazca in the Nasca desert. Bodies of ancient Nasca people were preserved in the Chauchilla Cemetery. The arid climate of the region helped to preserve those bodies by natural mummification.

The Nazca culture had the habit of burying their people. Thanks to this practice, the Nasca people left almost untouched ceramics, colorful textiles, mummies, skulls and devices. Local thieves and tomb robbers were aware of this since the end of the XX century; the only things that they left behind on the desert were the mummies and minor belongings. The mummies are reorganized and exposed inside 12 underground tombs. The bodies are conserved in a way that they look like ghosts sending messages from the past in the middle of the desert. The cemetery is located near the famed Nazca lines. Visit this place and see how brave you really are!
