Cerro Tronador: Thunderous and Magnificent
The sound of the avalanches of Cerro Tronador can be heard miles away. That is how this mountain got its name. The aborigines call it Anon. A solid cap of ice has covered the summit of this mountain for many years. Seven glaciers cover this astonishing place.
This wonderful place is located just 90 km away from the city of San Carlos de Bariloche. It is 3,478 meters high, which makes it the highest peak in Nahuel Huapi, a National Park in Argentina. This hill has three peaks: the Argentine, the Chilean and the International.
All these peaks are great challenges for any mountain climber; in fact, many of them visit Bariloche in the summer. Around 500,000 people visit San Carlos de Bariloche each year. Today, this place is among the top destinations in Argentina and Thunder Mountain (Cerro Tronador) has a lot to do with it.
On January 29, 1934, Hermann Claussen became the first person that climbed Cerro Tronador. After many attempts, he finally fulfilled his mission. Even if you are not a fan of climbing mountains, you can simply go there and admire the astonishing surroundings of this place; this experience will last for a lifetime.
