The Archaeological Site of Chavin: The Cradle of Peruvian Culture


The Archaeological Site of Chavin is located about 250 Km to the north of Lima, Peru. It is specifically placed between the Cordillera Blanca and the Andean mountain ranges of the Cordillera Negra. Because of this incredible location, it is very well-known for the collection and dissemination of material goods and ideas. It is estimated that it was built near 900 B.C. Chavín de Huantar has been declared UNESCO World Heritage Site that, these days, is attracting huge amounts of tourists form all over the world.

As a general fact, the whole archaeological Site is made up of two core structures, which are called the Old and New Temples. The first one of them had such a “U” form and boasted a central court, which was full of stone monuments and obelisks. Those monuments portray different forms such as hawks, caymans and jaguars among lots of anthropomorphic forms. On the other hand, the New Temple was constructed, as an approximate, between 500 and 200 B.C and also depicted several relief structures. Something really interesting about this New Temple is that it has an enormous stair and hidden passageways that were used by priests to make their appearance be looked as something their audience could perceive as miraculous.
