Las Cruces
South America is the fourth largest continent of the Western Hemisphere. It is divided politically into 12 independent countries namely Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, and Venezuela and the overseas department of French Guiana. The continent extends to 7,640 kilometers from Punta Gallinas, Colombia, in the north to Cape Horn, Chile, in the south. At its broadest point, near where it is crossed by the equator, the continent extends to 5,300 kilometers from east to west. South America is connected to North America by the Isthmus of Panama. Las Cruces is a city in Dona Ana County, New Mexico, United States. As of 2000 census, the city had a total population of 74,267 people. The population of the city was 82,671 according to the 2005 census, making it the second largest city in the state. Las Cruces is the center of an agricultural region irrigated by the Rio Grande, which flows through the city. The city has got an elevation of 4000 feet or 1219 meters above the sea level. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 135.2 kilometers. It was founded that Las Cruces' is a Spanish name for crossroads or the crosses has been a disputed topic among legitimate historians. Las Cruces lacks a true central business district. Most Las Crucens would agree that the modern heart of the city, where most stores and restaurants are located, is the area running down Telshor Boulevard and Lohman Avenue. Las Cruces' only shopping mall and a variety of retail stores and restaurants are located in this area. However, the historic downtown of the city is the area around Main Street, a six-block stretch of which was closed off in 1973 to form the Downtown Mall. Presently, Las Cruces experiences a sharp social, economic and population growth derivative of the strategic position of the locality and the high level of well-being and quality of life that is enjoyed with respect to other places of South America. Las Cruces, justifiably so, enjoys a very positive reputation with worldwide travelers, and is one of the most visited place.
