Recife




South America is thefourth largest continent of the Western Hemisphere. It is divided politically into 12 independent countries namely Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, and Venezuela and the overseas department of French Guiana. The continent extends to 7,640 kilometers from Punta Gallinas, Colombia, in the north to Cape Horn, Chile, in the south. At its broadest point, near where it is crossed by the equator, the continent extends to 5,300 kilometers from east to west.
 
Recife is the third largest city in the Northeastern region of Brazil and the largest metropolitan area. The population in 2005 estimated was 1,501,000 and 3,599,181 in the metropolitan area. It is the fifth largest metropolitan area in Brazil and the capital of Pernambuco. Recife is also where the Beberibe River meets the Capibaribe River to flow into the Atlantic Ocean. Recife is served by Guararapes International Airport. It is surrounded by rivers and crossed by bridges and is full of islands and mangroves that magnify its geography.
 
Recife is known as the Brazilian Venice, thanks to its fluvial resemblance with the European city, and is considered one of Brazil's cultural capitals. Temperature in Recife ranges from 23 to 27 degrees Celsius. The rainy season usually goes from February to July. Recife's main tourist attractions are churches and historical monuments, including 17th and 18th century constructions from Portuguese and Dutch colonizers Francisco Brennand's atelier of ceramic art. Recife provides visitors and residents with various sport activities. There are several soccer clubs based in Recife, such as Santa Cruz, which takes part of the Campeonato Brasileiro Serie national soccer league.
