Manaus
South America is a continent situated in the western hemisphere and, mostly, the southern hemisphere, bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean and on the north and east by the Atlantic Ocean, North America and the Caribbean Sea lie to the northwest. Brazil, officially the Federative Republic of Brazil, is the largest and most populous country in South America, and fifth largest in the world in both area and population. Manaus is a city in north-west Brazil, nevertheless, according to the country's official regional division, it is part of the North of Brazil, and capital of Amazonas State, which is the largest state of Brazil. It is located on the Negro River near its confluence with the Amazon, it is the chief port and a hub for the region's extensive river system. Its population is estimated to be around 1,800,000 inhabitants. Although the main industry of Manaus through much of the last century was rubber, it is no longer as important as it once was. Given its location, timber and Brazil-nuts make up important trades, as do petroleum refining, soap manufacture and chemical industries. Over the last decades, a system of federal investments and tax incentives has turned the surrounding region into a major industrial center, the Zona Franca of Manaus. Manaus is one of the most isolated metropolitan areas of the world, accessible by ground transportation only by two highways. The main means of access is by air or by the rivers surrounding the city. The city is served by the Eduardo Gomes International Airport.
The dense Amazon rainforest, the jagged spires of the Andes Mountains, the Tropical beaches and the Towering waterfalls, with this kind of nature all around, it's no wonder why South America have become nearly synonymous with Adventure travel and ecotourism.
