Macapa
South America is a continent situated in the western hemisphere and, mostly, the southern hemisphere, bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean and on the north and east by the Atlantic Ocean, North America and the Caribbean Sea lie to the northwest. Brazil, officially the Federative Republic of Brazil, is the largest and most populous country in South America, and fifth largest in the world in both area and population. Macapa is the capital of the state of Amapa, one of the states of Brazil, located in the extreme north, on the Amazon River. Mining is central to its economy. It exports tin iron, gold, and manganese, as well as lumber, oil, animal pelts, and fish. Manufactures include rubber products and automobiles. Founded in 1688 by military men in the vicinity of a fortress protecting access to the mouth of the Amazon, Macapa grew very slowly until it became the capital of Amapa, which was created, as a federal territory, in 1944. As of 2005, its population stood at 339,500 inhabitants. The old fortress is now a regional museum. The dense Amazon rainforest, the jagged spires of the Andes Mountains, the Tropical beaches, the Towering waterfalls, With this kind of nature all around, it's no wonder South America have become nearly synonymous with Adventure travel and ecotourism.
