Puerto San Julian
South America is thefourth largest continent of the Western Hemisphere. It is divided politically into 12 independent countries namely Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, and Venezuela and the overseas department of French Guiana. The continent extends to 7,640 kilometers from Punta Gallinas, Colombia, in the north to Cape Horn, Chile, in the south. At its broadest point, near where it is crossed by the equator, the continent extends to 5,300 kilometers from east to west. Puerto San Julian is known as Port St Julian, which is a natural harbor in the Santa Cruz Province of Argentina. It is located at 49 degree south and 67 degree west, near the entrance of the Strait of Magellan. At the time of sailing ships, it formed a stopping point, 110 miles on south of Puerto Deseado. These days, Puerto San Julian is also the name of a small town with a population of 6,143 inhabitants according to the 2001 census. Puerto San Julian was given its name by the Portuguese explorer, Ferdinand Magellan. He came there on 31 March, 1520 and over wintered in the harbor and met the residents who were described by Antonio Pigafetta as giants. He called them Patagonians, which meant, Big Feet, as they wore guanaco hide shoes or boots stuffed with straw. In April, he was faced by a rebellion led by his Spanish captains at midnight on Easter day and overcame it. He executed mutineers, which included one captain and leaving the other behind. He left the port on 21 August, 1520 and on 21 October, found the eastern entrance to the passageway he was looking for, the strait, which bears his name. A city known for its historic myths and traditions, scenic beauty, cooperative people and luxurious hotels and cottages, Puerto San Julian is one of the favorite holiday destinations for most of the vacation lovers.
