Puerto Montt
South America is thefourth largest continent of the Western Hemisphere. It is divided politically into 12 independent countries namely Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, and Venezuela and the overseas department of French Guiana. The continent extends to 7,640 kilometers from Punta Gallinas, Colombia, in the north to Cape Horn, Chile, in the south. At its broadest point, near where it is crossed by the equator, the continent extends to 5,300 kilometers from east to west. Puerto Montt is a port city in southern Chile and is the capital of the Llanquihue Province. It is located in Los Lagos region at 41 degree south and 72 degree west. The city has roughly about 1,75,938 inhabitants in an area of 1.673 squared kilometers. It was covered by a thick forest and received the name of Melipulli. It was chosen as an entrance to the Lake Llanquihue after its closeness to the open sea was revealed. In the summer of 1851, an team arrived from Chiloe to begin clearing that region and build houses for the new inhabitants. It was founded on February 12, 1853 after a government-sponsored immigration from Germany began in 1848 and populated the region to integrate it politically to the other parts of country. Puerto Montt’s economy is based on agriculture, forestry, fishing and salmon aquaculture. It is the fastest developing city in southern Chile due to explosive growth of salmon culture. It is also the gateway to Chiloe Island and other smaller islands in Chile's inland sea. It has one airport, El Tepual, where three airlines have regular flights from Santiago, Punta Arenas, Balmaceda and Bariloche. The airlines that operate in this airport are Lan Chile, Sky airlines and Aerolineas del Sur. The time taken for the flight to Santiago takes two hours and it also has the southernmost train station in the country. Today, one can also learn about its history, from its earliest times and gain enthusiasm in its natural beauty and populace. Puerto Montt enjoys a very positive reputation with worldwide travelers.
