Providencia
South America is the fourth largest continent of the Western Hemisphere. It is divided politically into 12 independent countries namely Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, and Venezuela and the overseas department of French Guiana. The continent extends to 7,640 kilometers from Punta Gallinas, Colombia, in the north to Cape Horn, Chile, in the south. South America is connected to North America by the Isthmus of Panama. It is washed on the north by the Caribbean Sea, on the east by the Atlantic Ocean, and on the west by the Pacific Ocean. Topographically the continent is divided into three sections namely the South American cordillera, the interior lowlands, and the continental shield. Roman Catholicism is the dominant religion and Portuguese and Spanish are the primary languages of the continent. Providencia is one of South America’s most popular destinations, and is well known for the quantity of cultural related attractions and monuments. It is a municipality or a commune of Chile and located in the eastern zone of the Santiago Metropolitan region. It is surrounded by Santiago to the west, Recoleta to the northwest, Las Condes and Vitacura to the northeast, La Reina to the east, and Nunoa to the south. Providencia possesses a total land area of 14.4 square kilometers and a population of 120,874 inhabitants as of 2002 census. It has grown as the home to a large upper-middle-class population and contains many high-rise apartment buildings and single-family homes as well as a significant portion of Santiago's commerce. The north of Providencia is a financial and commercial district centered on Providencia Avenue, a major shopping street, while the remainder of it contains high-priced residential development. Other notable and worth visiting places in Providencia include the Metropolitan Zoo, the Teleferico which is an aerial gondola that transports people from the foot of Pedro de Valdivia Avenue to the top of Cerro San Cristobal, several television networks, radio cooperatives, and the Mormon temple. Providencia is a city known for its historic myths and traditions, scenic beauty, cooperative people and luxurious hotels and cottages. It is also one of the favorite holiday destinations for most of the vacation lovers.
