Chillan

South America is the fourth largest continent of the Western Hemisphere. It is divided politically into 12 independent countries namely Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, and Venezuela and the overseas department of French Guiana. The continent extends to 7,640 kilometers from Punta Gallinas, Colombia, in the north to Cape Horn, Chile, in the south. South America is connected to North America by the Isthmus of Panama. It is washed on the north by the Caribbean Sea, on the east by the Atlantic Ocean, and on the west by the Pacific Ocean.

Chillan is one of South America’s most popular destinations, and is well known for the quantity of cultural related attractions and monuments. It is a city in Chile and is located about 400 kilometers to the south of the capital Santiago, near the geographical center of the country. It is also the capital of Nuble province in the Bio-Bio region.

Founded in 1580, Chillan was initially known as San Bartolome de Gamboa and was founded by Martin Ruiz de Gamboa, who protested in opposition to the local indigenous people at the time. However, this name did not fare well, and was replaced by the current name, which in the local Indian language means where the sun is sitting.

Chillan has also presented to the world a number of great artists. A very notable example is Claudio Arrau, the world famous pianist. Additionally, there is Ramon Vinay, the tenor who was the Othello of the 1950s. His recording of the role with Toscanini is a perennial classic. He was a regular at the New York's Metropolitan Opera, where he sang both tenor and baritone roles. One of his last performances at this house was as the Barber of Seville's Basilio, a bass role.

Presently, Chillan de Patagones experiences a sharp social, economic and population growth derivative of the strategic position of the locality and the high level of well-being and quality of life that is enjoyed with respect to other places of South America. This fact has consolidated along with other adjacent municipalities, as a great alternative for residence.

Chillan, justifiably so, enjoys a very positive reputation with worldwide travelers, and is one of the most visited place. It is also said the place of best geographical environment and can trace its origin back to prehistoric times.
