Vina del Mar

South America is thefourth largest continent of the Western Hemisphere. It is divided politically into 12 independent countries namely Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, and Venezuela and the overseas department of French Guiana. The continent extends to 7,640 kilometers from Punta Gallinas, Colombia, in the north to Cape Horn, Chile, in the south. At its broadest point, near where it is crossed by the equator, the continent extends to 5,300 kilometers from east to west.

South America is connected to North America by the Isthmus of Panama. It is washed on the north by the Caribbean Sea, on the east by the Atlantic Ocean, and on the west by the Pacific Ocean. Topographically the continent is divided into three sections namely the South American cordillera, the interior lowlands, and the continental shield. Roman Catholicism is the dominant religion and Portuguese and Spanish are the primary languages of the continent.

Vina del Mar, also known locally as La Ciudad Jardin is a thriving coastal city in central Chile, in the Valparaiso region. The population stands at 318,489 as on April 24, 2004, making it Chile's fourth biggest city. It is best known as a tourist and beach destination. One of its key attractions includes a gambling casino and a yearly music festival. The city also hosts a yearly ATP, Association of Tennis Professionals, tennis tournament in clay courts.

Vina del Mar is located some 110 kilometers north-west from Santiago de Chile and borders with the port of Valparaíso to the south. Visitors and locals enjoy the parks and water fountains of the city, including a large clock with its numbers made up of flowering plants. Most of the older buildings that remain are located along Libertad Avenue, Quillota Street and Quinta Vergara, a rather big park in the middle of the city. It is a city with endless recreational opportunities, rich history, and modern day luxuries.
