Cauquenes
South America is the fourth largest continent of the Western Hemisphere. It is divided politically into 12 independent countries namely Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, and Venezuela and the overseas department of French Guiana. The continent extends to 7,640 kilometers from Punta Gallinas, Colombia, in the north to Cape Horn, Chile, in the south. At its broadest point, near where it is crossed by the equator, the continent extends to 5,300 kilometers from east to west. South America is connected to North America by the Isthmus of Panama. It is washed on the north by the Caribbean Sea, on the east by the Atlantic Ocean, and on the west by the Pacific Ocean. Topographically the continent is divided into three sections namely the South American cordillera, the interior lowlands, and the continental shield. Roman Catholicism is the dominant religion and Portuguese and Spanish are the primary languages of the continent. Cauquenes is one of South America’s most popular destinations, and is well known for the quantity of cultural related attractions and monuments. Initially, Cauquenes emerged in May 23, 1794. It has now grown as a city in Chile and is the capital of Cauquenes province located in the Maule region.
According to precious archeological findings, it can be affirmed that Cauquenes was first populated by an indigenous community known as the Promaucaes, of the Maule area, who owned a settlement in the place where the city lies today. The name of the city changed with time first starting with Villa de Cauquenes and eventually simply as Cauquenes.
Today, Cauquenes has a total land area of 2,126 square kilometers and the population of the city is 41,217 inhabitants of whom 21,125 are female and 20,092 are male. Roughly one quarter of the population lives in rural areas while three quarters live in urban ones. The industrial development in and around this municipality has been a determining factor for its economic growth and population and although the industry is losing force in the last decades, the might of the sector services continues attracting new inhabitants in the city. Cauquenes is also one of the preeminent, historical and potential tourism destinations that enjoy a very positive reputation with worldwide travelers to become one of the most visited places.
