South America is the fourth largest continent of the Western Hemisphere. It is divided politically into 12 independent countries namely Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, and Venezuela and the overseas department of French Guiana. The continent extends to 7,640 kilometers from Punta Gallinas, Colombia, in the north to Cape Horn, Chile, in the south.
 
At its broadest point, near where it is crossed by the equator, the continent extends to 5,300 kilometers from east to west. South America is connected to North America by the Isthmus of Panama. It is washed on the north by the Caribbean Sea, on the east by the Atlantic Ocean, and on the west by the Pacific Ocean. Topographically the continent is divided into three sections namely the South American cordillera, the interior lowlands, and the continental shield. Roman Catholicism is the dominant religion and Portuguese and Spanish are the primary languages of the continent.
 
Cascavel is a city and municipality in western Parana state, Brazil. The population of the city is 272.243 inhabitants. The city is on a plateau which is 781 meters above sea level. It is located at about 504 kilometers from west of the state capital of Curitiba and 605 kilometers west of the sea port of Paranagua, 140 kilometers from the 3 borders, Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil. Cascavel is responsible for 26 percent of the total production of cereals in the state of Parana. The main crops are soybeans, wheat, corn, rice, cotton and beans. It is also a big producer of poultry, swine and beef cattle.
 
Cascavel has one of the most advanced medical centers of the state, especially in videosurgery. Both genesis and salete hospitals have centers for diagnostic and therapeutic videosurgery that works with multiple departments. The Centers offer a wide range of general surgical procedures including videoesophagogastric fundoplasty, videolaparoscopic cholecystectomy and videolaparoscopic colon resection.
